The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has forecasted that the current adverse weather conditions will persist across Maldives for the next two days.
The warning comes as the Maldives fully transitions from the northeast monsoon (‘Iruvai’) to the southwest monsoon (‘Hulhangu’). According to MET, widespread rain is anticipated across the country during the period. The authority also alerted to heavy downpours in several regions.
What to Expect
For the upcoming 24 hours, the national weather agency’s outlook does not appear traveler-friendly for sea-bound vessels. MET expects scattered rain showers in milder circumstances and thunderstorms in more serious conditions. Some islands are likely to experience heavy rainfall while seas will remain rough nationwide.
Wind speeds in the southern atolls, which has already picked pace, are forecasted to range between 15 and 25 miles per hour from west and north-west. For the rest of the country, winds are expected to maintain speeds of 13 to 23 miles per hour with gusts potentially clocking at 40 miles per hour during squalls.
Meanwhile, MET projects sea conditions to remain rough for the next 24 hours. Wave heights are estimated between 4 to 7 feet.
Practice Caution to Avoid Undesirable Events
Due to prevailing strong winds and heavy rainfall, relevant authorities have already urged the public solidify precautionary steps. Residents are advised to prepare for potential flooding and to secure loose items that could be displaced by high winds.
Furthermore, seafarers and those traveling by sea have been strongly cautioned to practice vigilance. MET has advised the public to closely monitor weather updates before embarking on any journeys.
