State Trading Organization (STO) has opened the first floor of its People’ Choice outlet, expanding its space and offerings for consumers.
This milestone adds to the brand’s growth since it brought the supermarket concept to the Maldives back in 1991. The STO People’s Choice gave Maldivians their first taste of one-stop shopping for everyday and general goods at affordable prices under one roof.
Since inception, STO has reimagined the outlet in 2022, turning it into the country’s first hypermarket. The new concepts brought home improvement brands into the same space as groceries and household essentials for the first time.
Building on that same momentum, STO opened a new branch in Hulhumale’ Phase 1 in February this year, fulfilling a long-standing request from the island’s residents.

The new first floor takes that expansion a step further, broadening the range and quality of products and services available to shoppers.
STO held the inauguration ceremony last Thursday, June 11, welcoming the Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed alongside members of STO Board and Executive Committee. Beyond this, suppliers and clients of STO General Trading brands were present at the inaugural event.
The new level focuses primarily on home improvement and home decor, housing a Procure Plus outlet, a Peekaboo outlet, and a dedicated display zone for Rainbow Home Improvement products. Shoppers will also find an expanded selection from established STO brand partners including Phillips, Russell Hobbs, LG, and Dyson.

The floor’s opening brings Sunmi, a Chinese technology brand, to the Maldivian market for the first time. Another feather added to STO’s expanding brand catalogue cap.
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, a cafe chain with a strong following among Maldivians, plans to open a branch on the floor soon. The date however, remains unannounced as of now.
STO has also decided the space with families in mind, adding a dedicated Kids’ Corner where toddlers can stay occupied while parents shop.
The first floor opens to the public for shopping this Friday, June 19.
