President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Fathimath Ameeza as the new Commissioner General of Taxation at the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), placing a veteran tax official at the helm the country’s revenue authority.

Ameeza, who hails from Gadhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, secured the appointment after Parliament approved her nomination.

She succeeds Hassan Zareer, who left the top post at MIRA after President Muizzu appointed him as Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises.

Ameeza brings more than 16 years of experience at MIRA to the role. The relevant parliamentary committee awarded her a score of 92.44 percent following its interview process, with members unanimously backing her suitability for the position.

Before taking the top job, Ameeza served as MIRA’s Deputy Commissioner General. She played a key role in tax policy reforms, strengthened the authority’s governance and operational systems, and spearheaded initiatives aimed at boosting state revenue.

Ameeza also previously led MIRA’s Enforcement Division, where she drove efforts to recover unpaid tax and non-tax revenue. She championed the use of data analytics and evidence-based enforcement strategies to strengthen revenue collection and improve compliance.

She holds a Master of Science in Accounting from the International Islamic University Malaysia and a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.
