Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially appointed Ambassador Thoriq Ibrahim as the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The nomination has already been forwarded to the Parliament for its approval.
The president is required to seek parliamentary approval for the appointment of representatives to international organizations. This presidential discretion comes directly from the Maldives Constitution and the Foreign Service Act.
Following the formal submission, the matter has been referred to the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee for review. Thoriq’s appointment will become set in stone once the committee concludes its evaluation and the nomination is approved by a majority vote in Parliament.
Thoriq, a veteran in environmental policy and renewable energy, has served as the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy before his appointment as the Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is a prominent intergovernmental organization headquartered in Abu Dhabi, comprising 169 member states along with the European Union (EU).
