Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has inaugurated their Community Urban Farming Project at Hulhumale’.

Moreover, the project was inaugurated by HDC on Tuesday, 21st September after handing the land plots to selected candidates of the project. The project was officiated by Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr. Hussain Rasheed.

The event was also graced by Japanese Ambassador in the Maldives and the UNDP’s Resident Representative to the island nation, who took part in the inauguration as well.

Executed as part of the sustainable economic employment for the development of MSMC, the project covers a total of 19,877.26 square-feet, distributed into 16 plots and handed over to the selected candidates.

Furthermore, the 16 plots have been assigned to 16 groups, each group consisting of 3 individuals while these groups have been further broken down into 3 categories that are women/youths, people with disabilities and other persons.

The project aims to raise awareness on farming and making individuals familiarize with the concepts of farming. Moreover, this initiative is utilized to further attract people into the industry as well.

Meanwhile, awareness and training programs focused on the participants of the project were conducted by the ministry along with BCC and Agronat.

While this is the first-of-its-kind project carried jointly by HDC and UNDP, participants are not charged with a rent on the plots for the first 3 months while an allowance will be disbursed to them in order ensure feasibility of the project.
