According to the most recent statistical updates from Ministry of Tourism, the Maldives has attracted a total of 24,527 tourists as of 05th January 2022.

Surprisingly, this indicates a strong 56.4% growth in tourist arrivals during the current year when compared with the corresponding period in 2021 during which the arrival total reached just 15,680. Moreover, compared to the arrival figure of the same period in 2019, the arrival count in 2022 observed a growth of 10.3% as well.

However, the total tourist arrivals in 2022 as of review date is below 10.75% when compared with the same period in 2020 during which the arrival total stood at 27,314.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism confirms that the daily average of tourist arrival in 2022 is currently at 4,905 while the average duration of stay is 9.0-days.

India has slipped significantly below in source market rankings whereas Russia has once again grabbed top spot. As of 05th January, Russian travelers to the Maldives account for 27.3% of all tourist arrivals while a total of 6,700 Russians have visited the island nation so far.

In a rather surprising ‘takeover’, Italy has grabbed second spot in top source market rankings with 3,162 arrivals from the country so far which accounts for 12.9% of all tourist arrivals while Germany has been the most consistent source market; still holding on third rank – so far a total of 1,665 Germans have visited Maldives which accounts for 6.8% of tourist arrivals.

Meanwhile, the previous top source market; India is currently faring at fourth spot with 1,480 arrivals so far which is 6.0% of all tourist arrivals while United Kingdom is on fifth spot with 1,475 tourist arrivals so far (6.0%).

The previous fifth rank holder, United States has completely slipped out from the top ten source market list owing to the worsening Omicron cases that has resulted in stringent travel restrictions for the country.

Moreover, Maldives currently has a total of 161 resorts, 624 hotels and guesthouses and 145 safari vessels in operational capacity – with a combined operational bed capacity of 53,166.

As of 05th January, a total of 29 confirmed international airlines are operating their flights to the Maldives which includes British Airways, Fly Dubai, GoAir, Air France, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Air Vistara, Neos, Gullivair and Condor among several others.

Meanwhile, with information corroborated by various health agencies in the Maldives only 0.16% of the total tourist arrivals in 2022 (from 01st to 05th Jan) have tested positive for Covid-19.
