    4 kiloton cold storage facility in development on Felivaru

    Rinac India Limited has been awarded the contract for the construction of a 4,000-ton cold storage facility at Lh. Felivaru.

    A press release by the Ministry of Economic Development said the cold storage complex development at Felivaru and the development of an ice plant facility in GA. Gemanafushi has been a joint decision from the ministry and Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).

    The agreement was signed on Wednesday evening, 18th January, at HDh. Hanimaadhoo. Both the cold storage and ice plant projects were awarded to Rinac India Limited.

    The USD 23 million project, launched under a line of credit from India’s EXIM Bank, will be the largest cold storage facility ever built in the country.

    According to the Ministry of Economic Development, upon completion of the project, Felivaru will house a brine freezing facility with the capacity to house 200 tons of fish per day and 80 tons of refrigerated seawater system. Additionally, there will be a 50-ton block ice plant and a 100-ton ice storage in Gemanafushi.

    Under the project, the cold storage facility is built on an area of 5.7 hectares of land. Other project components include development of an export jetty, a catch weighing jetty and a public jetty, while 85% of the work on the structures have already been completed.

    Meanwhile, the government announced a bid to develop a 100-ton fish processing factory in Felivaru, which will include a 40-ton fishmeal plant.
