Male’ City Council began installing smart streetlights on the streets of Male’ City on Monday.

China’s Yunnan Province donated the streetlights, said the council.

The project was inaugurated by the city’s mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Head of Delegation on behalf of Yunnan Province Ma Zuoxin at a ceremony held on Monday evening.

Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Lixin was in attendance of the ceremony.

According to the council, 10 smart streetlight poles have been installed from the Artificial Beach area to Lonuziyaarai Park. The council further said that it will prioritize installing the lights on the city’s main roads first, and later on other roads.

The smart streetlights feature free Wi-Fi, a digital LED screen, speaker system, CCTV cameras, and environmental sensor to detect weather changes.

The city’s mayor said that with this project, the streetlights will be used to convey public messages needed by the council, important messages for the community, religious guidance, advice, and duas.

The council will have full control over the CCTV cameras which will be monitored through the council’s CCTV monitoring system. Footage recorded on these cameras will be shared with police when required.

The mayor thanked China’s Yunnan Province, the Chinese Foreign Ministry, and the Chinese Governor for their support.

“This arrangement was possible because of the close relationship between the two cities. They have been very supportive of Male’ City in the past,” Dr. Muizzu said.

The smart streetlights initiative is part of the “Digital Male’ City” project of the council’s strategic action plan.
