President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih officially inaugurated the new powerhouse developed in Vaavu atoll Thinadhoo.
The new powerhouse was developed away from the main settlement in the island to ensure the excess fumes and smoke from the outlet does not create nuisance for the public and tourists.
The island’s powerhouse is the first-ever to be taken under State Electric Company’s (STELCO) management after the government began managing powerhouses developed by the public in their respective residential islands.
When STELCO took over, the outlet had a single small power generator. However, STELCO procured, assembled and installed larger units shortly after taking over to ensure uninterrupted power output.
STELCO decided to develop a larger powerhouse outlet to cater the demand for electricity in the island for local households, and the budding local tourism industry which attracts thousands of tourists year long. STELCO contracted the project on September 24, 2020.
Earlier in 2018, President Solih assured he will facilitate uninterrupted power services for Thinadhoo locals. With his pledge fullfilled, Thinadhoo currently has a powerhouse capable of producing 1.3 megawatt of power.
Additionally, the outlet has the capacity of catering to the strong power demand in the island with its local tourism economy getting stronger by day. Besides the new outlet, STELCO installed 30-kilowatt solar panels on the new building’s roof to reduce dependency on oil to power the generators.
