Maldives government to grant license to Elon Musk's Starlink internet service

Maldives government on Thursday, August 24, announced its decision to grant license to SpaceX’s Starlink high-speed internet services in the island nation.

The Tesla, SpaceX and now Twitter honcho Elon Musk founded Starlink in a bid to provide high-speed internet across the globe at affordable rates.

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has already extended invitations to local media on Thursday morning for the special ceremony scheduled for Thursday afternoon to grant the ISP license to Starlink; the details expected soon.

While the Maldives earlier was set to gain access to SpaceX’s Starlink in February 2021, the plan hit limbo for further discussions between Maldives government and SpaceX.

The Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna held discussions with SpaceX in 2022 towards launching Starlink services in the Maldives.

“Discussions are ongoing. SpaceX requested not to disclose the information until the discussions are completed,” the minister said earlier.

Musk’s Starlink is now accessible across 50 countries including the Europe, North and South American countries as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Starlink’s speeds are set between 50-150 megabits per second while internet speeds further boosted to 300 megabits per second last year.
