    Ooredoo Maldives has announced the highly anticipated return of Ooredoo Masrace.

    The annual fishing competition, Ooredoo Masrace, has been a popular event across the Maldives since its debut.

    Ooredoo Maldives, in its Wednesday announcement, promised an even bigger fishing tournament in 2024 – with the tournament taking place in three different islands; including Himmafushi, Naifaru, and Thinadhoo City.

    “As an activity deeply rooted in the Maldivian culture, Ooredoo Maldives is proud to host this event that showcases our rich fishing heritage,” said Ooredoo Maldives.

    At a press conference held in Himmafushi on Wednesday, Ooredoo Maldives also announced its partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources for this year’s event, and subsequently opened registration for interested participants.

    “We are excited to join hands with the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources in organizing Ooredoo Masrace 2024. As a community focused company, we invite all fishing enthusiasts to join us and be a part of the biggest fishing competition of the Maldives,” said Khalid Al-Hamadi, the CEO and Managing Director of Ooredoo Maldives.

    “We are delighted to partner for Ooredoo Masrace 2024, a significant event that celebrates our fishing heritage,” Minister of State for Fisheries Mohamed Mutholib said.

    “Together, we aim to empower our communities to uphold our traditions and spread awareness on safeguarding our marine resources for future generations,” he added.

    Interested participants can register their teams via online portal from July 17 to 24, 2024. Each team shall consist of 8 to 12 members, including the captain and officials.

    The competition will commence on the following dates at the three designated islands;

    • Himmafushi: August 9, 2024
    • Thinadhoo City: August 16, 2024
    • Naifaru: August 23, 2024

    According to Ooredoo Maldives, this year’s Masrace event will feature a maximum of 16 teams competing from each area, and in the case of overwhelming number of registrations, a draw will be held to select the participating teams.

    The teams that do not land a spot through the draw will receive a full refund.

    For this year’s Ooredoo Masrace, a prize pool worth MVR 126,000 has been awarded;

    • 1st Place: MVR 25,000
    • 2nd Place: MVR 10,000
    • 3rd Place: MVR 5,000
    • Best Fisherman: MVR 1,000
    • Best Fisherwoman: MVR 1,000
