Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has met with China’s Member of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi for extensive bilateral discussion in Beijing, on Monday.

The two held official talks on bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and China; with a focus on seeking the Asian economic powerhouse’s assistance with Maldives’ planned fiscal reforms.

Minister Wang welcomed Zameer to China, and reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to further strengthen the historic and friendly relationship between the two nations. Minister Zameer, in similar fashion, extended warm greetings from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and formally delivered two letters addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping from President Dr. Muizzu.

During the meeting, Minister Zameer reiterated Maldives’ commitment to the One-China Principle and to the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership agreed upon during President Muizzu’s state visit to China earlier in January this year.

The discussion covered a wide range of topics essential to the continued enhance of the two countries’ ties.

Zameer briefed the Chinese minister on the economic and fiscal situation in the Maldives, emphasizing the importance of carrying out the fiscal reforms, announced by President Dr. Muizzu, diligently. In this regard, Zameer sought China’s support to the Maldives in carrying out the government’s reform program, which “will foster consumer and investor confidence” in the island nation’s economy.
