The Minister of Social and Family Development Dr. Aishath Shiham announced the current government’s plan of introducing a new loan program for female entrepreneurs. The loan program was announced by the minister at the launching event of the new Hiyala Weekend Market, at the Container Park Area in Hulhumale’. At the event, the minister said the loan program would be announced soon, though specifics were not mentioned. However, the minister announced it would be an MVR 100 million loan program. The loan scheme is introduced to empower female entrepreneurs and local businesses run by women.

Business Center Corporation (BCC) launched the Hiyala Weekend Market on Friday, January 19, 2024. The market is a collaborative effort of the BCC and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade aimed at empowering women entrepreneurs and their businesses, and provide a platform to showcase Maldivian products. The initiative is aligned with the current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s “Hafthaa 14” (Week-14) pledge as well. Housing Development Corporation (HDC), on Thursday, January 18, 2024, has reverted to using its original title on ‘effective immediate’ capacity. HDC reinstated the original name as its corporate identity with the “aim of connecting with” its roots. The State Electric Company (STELCO) has signed an agreement with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on relocation the utility provider’s fuel pump station. The agreement was signed between STELCO and MTCC on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at a special ceremony held for the occasion. Enforcement action by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of the United Kingdom against Wizz Air has led to USD 1.57 million being refunded to passengers, reports Travel Weekly. More than 25,000 claims have already been re-examined and additional payments have been disbursed to around 6,000 cases, as per CAA. Earlier, Wizz Air claimed USD 114 million had been invested to improve the airline’s operations after CAA took “unprecedented enforcement action” against Wizz Air in 2023, for “falsely refusing passenger compensation claims for flight disruption”.
