Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), under its Visit Maldives branding, has announced that Maldives will be represented at ITB China 2024. The ITB China is one of the largest B2B exclusive trade shows focused on the Chinese travel market, scheduled from May 27 to 29, 2024 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center. A circular was earlier dispatched by MMPRC about expression for interest for ITB China 2024, in order to “estimate the overall number of companies interested” to participate in this year’s event.
All major perishables items saw notable decline in imported quantity during December 2023, reports Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). MPL, that manages and oversees operations of the Male’ Commercial Harbor reports, the most significant decline in import numbers of fast moving perishable commodities like Pineapple, Cabbage and Banana. The first two observed 29% drop each with the third observing a 24% decline. During the month, MPL cleared 4,540 containers, which is 6,443 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This includes 2,637 units of 20 feet containers and 1,903 of 40 feet containers.
Students of Himandhoo School visited Urbanco for a career exploration trip on Monday, January 16, 2024. The students explored the available career paths at the corporation during their visit, and learned about Urbanco’s operations including its hiring process, fields of work and career opportunities. Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) reports a total revenue of MVR 2.21 billion in December 2023, out of which 97.21 million was collected in US Dollar. The total revenue collection for the month was however, a 15.4% decline compared to December 2022. This decrement was due to the Lease Period Extension Fee; which was one of the highest revenue contributors in December 2022. As of January 10, 2024 the Maldives has attracted a little over 50,000 arrivals according to the Ministry of Tourism. Ministry of Tourism in its most recent update revealed a total of arrival of 50,983 as of January 9, which is a 6.4% annual increment compared to the 47,931 arrivals registered in the same duration last year. While Russia leads the pack with over 7,500 arrivals, Italy is currently at second spot with a little over 7,200 arrivals. India is the third strongest market with more than 3,700 arrivals. The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives in Raa atoll, has announced the installation of solar panels as part of the property’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices. State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has procured and brought two 1.6-megawatt high-speed power generator containers. STELCO via X on Saturday, January 13, 2024 confirmed the arrival of the two generator-containers. The utility provider also assured provision of two more generator-containers ahead of the peak season, to provide a collective total of 6.4-megawatt of power generation capacity. STELCO said it aimed to provide uninterrupted electricity to the people in Greater Male’ region through this provision.
Regional Airports Company Limited (RACL) celebrates three years of service excellence and management of regional airports. RACL was established by the Maldivian government to maintain and manage the regional or domestic airports in the Maldives. The company manages a total of seven regional airports which includes Kulhudhuffushi Airport, Fuvahmulah Airport, Hanimaadhoo International Airport, and Maavarulu Airport among others. The Maldives has welcomed the first cruise liner arrival to the island nation in 2024, carrying a substantial number of travelers. The Costa Serena, originating from Cochin, India, berthed in the Maldives on January 8, 2024. The Italian cruise liner reportedly accommodated over 2,000 travelers and previously made stops in Mumbai and Goa before reaching the Maldives. The liner is berthed outside of Male’ City.
