A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread destruction and loss of life across the region. The tremors were felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, leading to the collapse of buildings and numerous casualties.

    Impact in Myanmar

In Myanmar, the earthquake’s epicenter was near Mandalay, the nation’s second-largest city. State media reports indicate that at least 144 people have been killed and over 700 injured, with numbers expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Significant structural damage has been reported, including the collapse of buildings and bridges.

    Impact in Thailand

In Bangkok, approximately 600 miles from the epicenter, the quake caused severe damage. A high-rise building under construction collapsed, resulting in at least eight deaths and leaving over 117 individuals missing. The Thai capital has been declared a disaster area, and emergency services are conducting search and rescue operations.

    Regional Effects and Aftershocks

The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar and Thailand, with tremors felt in neighboring countries, including China and India. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a significant aftershock measuring 6.4 in magnitude shortly after the initial quake.

    Ongoing Response

Authorities in both Myanmar and Thailand are mobilizing resources for rescue and relief efforts. Myanmar’s ruling military has declared a state of emergency in multiple regions and is appealing for international assistance. In Bangkok, emergency services are working tirelessly to locate and assist those trapped under debris.
