Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, has issued a fresh call for proposals to lease a second wide-body aircraft, superseding its initial announcement. This move aligns with the government’s strategic vision to enhance the country’s international aviation capabilities and boost tourism.
The airline’s first wide-body aircraft, an Airbus A330-200, arrived at Velana International Airport on January 6, 2025. This milestone fulfilled a key presidential pledge by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to expand the nation’s aviation sector. The aircraft, featuring a three-class configuration with 264 seats, is currently operating direct flights to major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu
An official from Maldivian stated that the renewed announcement aims to attract additional interested parties beyond those who responded to the initial call in February. The airline is seeking to lease a second Airbus A330-200 for a five-year term, with the deadline for proposal submissions set for April 26.
President Muizzu has emphasized the importance of acquiring a second wide-body aircraft to facilitate direct flights to European destinations, with operations expected to commence by October this year . This expansion is anticipated to significantly bolster the Maldives’ tourism sector by increasing accessibility for travelers from long-haul markets.
The government’s initiative to enhance the national carrier’s fleet underscores its commitment to strengthening the country’s connectivity and economic growth through strategic investments in aviation infrastructure.
