President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on Maldivian writers to serve as noble defenders of their religion, nation, and homeland, using their words with responsibility and a shared sense of commitment to national progress.
In his message marking National Writers’ Day, observed annually on July 8, the President underscored the critical role writers play in shaping society. He highlighted their influence across all areas of life—including personal and civic relations, religious and educational development, as well as economic and political spheres.
“Writers hold a profound responsibility in national service, as the sensitivity and reach of their words can either build or destabilize nations,” President Muizzu said in his address. He reminded that throughout history, nations have been built on the ideas articulated by writers, while careless or divisive narratives have the power to erode unity and peace.
Reflecting on the Maldives’ development journey, the President acknowledged the enduring contributions of Maldivian writers in advancing national growth across various sectors. He urged the current generation of writers to wield their pens in the service of the people, encouraging fresh ideas, creativity, and vision to strengthen and enrich the country.
The President also shared a message on his official X account, extending heartfelt appreciation and greetings to Maldivian writers. He praised their vital role in preserving and promoting the Dhivehi language, calling it a fundamental pillar of the nation’s identity.
This year’s National Writers’ Day theme calls on writers to “Write and Lead the Way,” encouraging them not only to create but also to inspire and guide the nation through their work.
The Maldives celebrates National Writers’ Day each year on July 8, paying tribute to the individuals whose words shape the country’s social fabric and cultural heritage.
