The Ministry of Housing, on Monday, made the announcement of the new round of social housing scheme to begin accepting applications from January 15, 2026 onward.
The ministry’s announcement came hot in the heels of certain tweaks to the policy on government-initiated social housing schemes, which was officially put on the government gazette on Monday as well.
The Minister of Housing, Muththalib, while speaking about these changes, said the tweaks to the policies enhances eligibility for previous social housing recipients.
Among these include, as per Muththalib, those seeking more spacious two-room to three-room options due to spatial difficulties from previous housings. Despite this, the ministry adds, that priority will be given first to those who have not been recipients of any social housing schemes up to now.
Another key change is the government’s decision to shorten the duration of residence by migrants living in Male’ area as an eligibility criteria. Besides this the policy change also allows for spouses to apply for social housing if their significant others do not hold properties in the Greater Male’ area.
The policy change reflects President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s meeting with Male’ citizens and residents the previous month where many of the attendees voiced concerns about housing and living difficulties in the capital.
