The Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed on Tuesday has said over 3,200 start-ups and ventures have linked up to PayPal via Ooredoo’s m-Faisaa.
The minister’s statement came at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Tuesday.
Speaking with local press, the minister credits introduction of PayPal’s service to the current administration’s arduous efforts. Saeed noted that the introduction came through by the combined effort of the government, Ooredoo and PayPal.
Additional to this, the minister also responded to rumors regarding PayPal’s services in the Maldives. Claims of the service not fully available in the country, according to the minister, were political propaganda.
“It appears that some political figures with differing views are attempting to say ‘No, PayPal cannot be brought here’ now that PayPal has come to the Maldives,” the minister said.
Furthermore, the minister confirms a total of 3,280 start-ups have since linked up to PayPal since its introduction. Moreover, 2,159 wallets have been activated and in active use already.
These numbers, according to the minister, was a strong reply to those who did not believe the initiative was achievable.
Speaking about the prospects, the minister describes PayPal’s introduction as a brand new chapter with exciting new horizons.
