A case of an illegal chemical warehouse operated in a local Male’ City residence has attracted authority attention.

The chemical storage unit was discovered from a resident in Galolhu district (next to G. Gaskara Ge) in Lily Magu, central Male’.

This is the first reported incident of an illegal chemical warehouse run within the residential area of Male’ City after such warehouses were shifted out to either the Male’ Industrial Village or Thilafushi.

While several media brought the issue to the authority attention, Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) further claimed its Fire and Rescue team have made an initial inspection of the venue. Local authorities have claimed that several items were stored inside the warehouse illegally.

“We discovered several items stocked illegally here, we have brought this to the attention of Maldives Police Service and they have been attending to the case,” MNDF addressed.

It is legally restricted to store chemical or any other hazardous content within the residential areas in Male’ City. The state has already allocated the industrial areas in Hulhumale’ for chemical warehousing.

Storage or warehousing of chemicals and other hazardous materials became fully restricted following the deadly incendiary incident at H. Thilafushi Ge; which involved a fire erupting out of the chemical warehouse located in the building that ended rupturing violently.

The incident resulted in massive property damage, a building becoming completely unusable, injuries to some of the residents and the loss of one life.
