Maldives government has established a special council for tourism development, which will be chaired by the President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The “Visitor Economy Council” was formed at the first cabinet meeting of the newly inaugurated government.
At the press conference held by the President’s Office on Sunday, November 19, the Under-Secretary of Public Policy of the office Mohamed Firzul Abdulla Khaleel said that the tourism industry is one of the key and most dependable economic sectors in the Maldives, warranting special consideration and focus by the President.
Firzul said that President Muizzu pledged prioritization of the industry’s growth and progress.
He also added that the council was formed to address tourism industry needs and work for its collective growth.
“One of the key mandates of this council would be to diversify the tourism economy in the country,” Firzul commented.
The President’s Office Under-Secretary said the council aims to foster growth of new tourism niches including medical, educational and transport tourism instead of exclusively focusing on leisure tourism.
Besides the new tourism council, the government also formed the social and economic councils at the cabinet meeting as well. Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef will chair the social council while the Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed will chair the economic council.
