The Maldives Police Service (MPS) on Monday, 07th March, has warned on taking swift action against taxi centers found in violation of regulations by the Ministry of Transport. According to the authority, taxi centers discovered with hiked fare prices will be dealt with necessary action; including fining the entities. Earlier, it was reported that all the taxi centers operating in the Greater Male’ Region unanimously agreed to increase fare prices, effective from Thursday, 10th March 2022. State Trading Organization (STO) on Saturday, 05th March, confirmed the newly revised prices of petrol and diesel in the Maldivian market. The state-owned organization and the primary oil importer to the Maldives had hiked the prices in the Maldivian market in light of surging global oil prices amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. According to STO, petrol will be sold at MVR14.60 per liter whereas it was sold at MVR12.98 per liter previously. State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has confirmed that the company’s latest electricity network upgrade project has drawn close to completion. The utility provider initiated a network upgrade project on the island of Thoddoo, Alif Alif Atoll. STELCO will upgrade the island’s electricity distribution grid with the installation of 2,279 meters of low-voltage cables. Furthermore, STELCO confirms that the cable installation, as well as the entire network upgrade project, will be completed sometime on Monday, 07th March 2022. According to the latest update from the Ministry of Finance, the cumulative total of state expenditure has reached MVR4,315.9 million (MVR4.3 billion) as of 24th February 2022. The Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Ms. Aminath Shauna affirmed the state’s initiative of placing at least 1,000 solar units in local residences before the end of 2022. Tourist arrivals to the Maldives have exceeded 250,000 according to the latest updates from the Ministry of Tourism. The state body in their most recent statistical update revealed that the total number of tourist arrivals as of 23rd February 2022 reached 251,339, indicating an annual 46.9% increment in comparison with 2021. Statistics further conveyed that the total number of tourist arrivals for the same period in 2021 reached just a total of 171,091.
