    Tourist arrivals to the Maldives reach 1,078,635 as of 31st August 2022, reports Ministry of Tourism.

    According to the state body, tourist arrivals observed a 42.7% increment in annual terms compared to the corresponding period in 2021. Tourist arrivals for the same period in 2021 stood at 755,966.

    However, this was still 4.9% lower than the corresponding period in 2019. Tourist arrivals for the said period in 2019 stood at 1,134,071.

    Tourism source markets observed a key change as Russia took second spot, replacing United Kingdom. Source market arrival details are as follows;

    1. India – 153,204
    2. Russia – 123,208
    3. UK – 122,871
    4. Germany – 85,696
    5. Italy – 64,068
    6. USA – 50,925
    7. France – 34,355
    8. Spain – 27,364
    9. Saudi Arabia – 25,858
    10. Switzerland – 22,095

    One key source market that has shown the most noticeable upward momentum is Spain. The source market initially did not make the top-ten list, up to the review date 01st June 2022.

    The source market first replaced Austria in tenth spot on 08th June 2022, with an arrival count of just 13,315. Spain secured the tenth spot, consistently until 20th July before moving up to ninth spot by 03rd August, replacing Switzerland. The market once again moved one spot up to become the eight strongest source market by 24th August, and remained at the same spot by the latest reviewed date.
