The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) reveals it had a workforce of 6,700 even before its merger with Road Development Corporation (RDC).
Chief Executive of MTCC, Ahmed Saudhee confirmed this during a televised programme, where he added that this included 2,500 permanent staff with the rest being contract employees.
With this merger, Saudhee said, a significant portion of the 4,000-employee workforce of RDC will transition to MTCC. Saudhee said MTCC’s employees will be stationed in all the local islands following the merger.
Saudhee previously said that the corporation’s board has permitted a maximum workforce of 7,500 employees. He adds the surge in employee head count reflects the growing number of projects MTCC has committed to.
Earlier in August 31, Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced cost-cutting measures directed at state-owned enterprises (SOEs). He said close 6,000 employees across various SOEs will be laid off as part of the efforts to strengthen the overall operations of these companies.
His decision also reflects a recurring concern surrounding SOEs, that these corporations have been traditionally used to secure votes by guaranteeing employment.
An August circular of the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) revealed its decision for a 33% lay-offs from all SOEs in a bid to downsize the workforces to manageable levels.
PCB demanded all SOEs to comply with this policy within a three-month window starting from July 13, 2026.
