State Electric Company (STELCO) has announced expanding the infrastructure of Kaafu atoll Gulhi powerhouse. Besides an extension of the powerhouse premises, STELCO reports it has installed an additional power generator to cater to the rise in demand and consumption of electricity; especially during Ramadan. With the generator commissioned and installed, the power output capacity of Gulhi has increased from 1,008 kilowatts to 1,184 kilowatts. Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) has issued a directive on disbursing Ramadan allowances to employees on Sunday, March 03, 2024. According to the PCB, as per the amendment to Article 4 of the Act No: 2/2008 (Employment Act), all Muslim employees are subject to a Ramadan allowance of MVR 3,000. For individuals employed under multiple employers, they are subject to this allowance from the main employer; with the rest of the employers refraining from disbursing the allowance. Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) will be acquiring a new vessel with the capacity of storing 3,000 metric tons, in a bid to enhance exporting capacity. The new vessel is scheduled to arrive in the Maldives in March, and will berth at Kooddoo upon arrival. MIFCO aims to resolve capacity limitations faced by Maldivian fishers, and subsequently expand exportation opportunities to drive up the fishing economy and market the Maldivian products in new areas; including tapping into potential European markets. Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced fee cuts at waste transfer stations within the Greater Male’ region. WAMCO said the revised pricing structure will be effective from March 01, 2024 onward. Private waste disposal vehicles utilizing facilities with weighbridges is now priced at USD49 per ton, and for state facilities, the fee is now at USD173 per ton based on the weight of the disposed garbage. Additionally, WAMCO said all users; private and state entities, as well as affiliated companies, will now be charged a service fee of USD 9.7 per vehicle visit to the WAMCO waste site.

Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel on Thursday, February 29, 2024, confirms the air ambulance services will officially commence on Friday, March 01, 2024. According to the minister, the service initially will commence between the Maldives and Sri Lanka. China Eastern Airlines resumed direct flights from Kunming to Velana International Airport (VIA) on Wednesday evening, February 28, 2024. The resumption flight was welcomed with a water salute by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal and the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Wang Lixin attended VIA to greet the new arrivals on Wednesday evening. With the resumption of China Eastern, tourist arrivals from the country are expected to boost in numbers in 2024. Meanwhile, China remains as the top source market to the Maldives with over 50,000 arrivals as of February 26, 2024.
