The Maldives government has announced its plans of selling MVR 5.2 billion worth treasury bills (T-Bills) to adjust the state’s expenditure. Ministry of Finance announced the sale of T-Bills has been set for the first working day of the new government, Sunday, November 19. Generally the Maldives government sells between MVR 1 to 2.5 billion per week in financial instruments including T-Bills. However, the latest announcement is a significant increment from this. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, fresh off of his oath taking, appointed the ministers to his cabinet on Friday evening, November 17. Tree Top Hospital announced its decision to host a roadshow to raise awareness about diabetes among public. The roadshow is aimed at spreading awareness about diabetes prevention measures and early diagnosis. General information related to the illness and basic tests will be carried out during the roadshow. The first floor of the Ministry of Finance’s building has been renamed the ‘Mujuthaba Floor’ to honor Ahmed Mujuthaba, who served in the ministry for fourteen years. Mujuthaba was serving as Chief Procurement Executive at the ministry when he suddenly passed away in July 2022. The ministry announced on social media that the floor has been renamed in his name to honor the legacy of Mujuthaba. The floor houses the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has raided the Ombudsperson’s Office of Transitional Justice over allegations of tampering with allegation findings. The crackdown was confirmed by an official of the commission. The commission raided the office due to recent allegations that came to light after one of its Ombudsperson, Jihadha Anees, made serious allegations in her resignation. The outgoing Ombudsperson had alleged that the office was altering the findings of ongoing or completed investigations. Schengen Visa in the Maldives can be applied online via e-visa services. Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid via social media X said that the European Council is adopting new visa rules which would allow e-visa application by Maldivians for Schengen Visa once the process commences. Once the administrative work related to the newly adopted rules of the European Council concludes, the ministry would announce a date when the service will launch. US President Joe Biden announced the designation of a presidential delegation to attend the inauguration of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on November 17, as the country’s next president. The Minister of Environment Aminath Shauna has sustained the initial fine of MVR 69 million on Afcons Infrastructure, the contractor handling the development of the Thilamale’ Bridge project.
