Maldives Media Council in association with Bank of Maldives (BML) hosts a financial journalism workshop. The special workshop, focused on business correspondents and reporters was held on Saturday, 19th November, at Manhattan Business Hotel. Virgin Atlantic announces its decision to launch direct flight operations to the Maldives next year. According various aviation reports, Virgin Atlantic will operate its flights from London Heathrow Airport to Velana International Airport (VIA) three days a week. The airline will reportedly launch its direct flights by the final quarter of 2023, precisely in October. The airline will reportedly operate its Boeing 787-9 commercial carriers to the route, which comes with 31 upper class seats, 35 premium seats and 192 economy-class seats.

The governor of Leningrad Region posted a video on social media on Saturday, 19th November 2022, of gas pipeline explosion outside St. Petersburg, Russia. “Firefighters and rescuers extinguish a fire caused by a gas pipeline depressurization between Berngardovka and Kovalevo,” Leningrad Region governor Alexander Drozdenko said, adding, “There is no threat to the population and the spread of fire to residential areas.” Meanwhile, the exact reason for this explosion has not been confirmed as of now. Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer affirms development project of the new Velana International Airport (VIA) passenger terminal will be completed in 2023. The minister made the confirmation to one of the local broadcasters. The new passenger terminal project comes under the airport’s expansion initiative, aiming to increase passenger movement to the country’s main air gateway. Budget Committee of Maldives Parliament has approved MVR6.4 million in the 2023 state budget towards the development of Arabiyya School. The rundown condition of one of the oldest public schools in Male’ City had attracted public criticism earlier. Meanwhile, state decided to establish the new school building at the old Jamaluddin School plot. State moved in to demolish the rundown structure in the plot and clear debris to facilitate construction of the school. Tourist arrivals to Maldives exceeds 1.42 million as of 16th November 2022. Ministry of Tourism, in their most recent statistics, confirmed tourist arrivals had reached an annual total of 1,421,907. This is a 30.7% annual increment when compared with the same period in 2021, during which arrivals reached 1,088,170. Despite this, arrivals in annual terms is still 3.0% below that of the same period in 2019. Arrivals in annual terms by the corresponding period reached 1,465,490. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) announce it will launch the Raajje-Transport Link (RTL) test trips in Lhaviyani atoll next week. The service commencement planned for Lhaviyani atoll marks the second phase of MTCC’s RTL; nationwide integrated ferry network. Meanwhile, the project’s contractor, MTCC, earlier dispatched speed boats to the atoll prior to service launch. According to the company, technical test trips, without passengers will be carried between 17th to 20th November. Road Development Corporation (RDC) Managing Director Ustad Moosa Ali Manik confirms development of Male’ City Ameenee Magu, one of the city’s prominent and larger roads, will enter second segment soon. Though an actual date has not been disclosed, RDC confirms first segment of the project has been completed already.
