The State Electric Company (STELCO) has signed an agreement with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on relocation the utility provider’s fuel pump station. The agreement was signed between STELCO and MTCC on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at a special ceremony held for the occasion. MTCC Chief Executive Officer Abdulla Ziyad signed on behalf of the contracting company while STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy signed on behalf of the utility provider. Enforcement action by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of the United Kingdom against Wizz Air has led to USD 1.57 million being refunded to passengers, reports Travel Weekly. More than 25,000 claims have already been re-examined and additional payments have been disbursed to around 6,000 cases, as per CAA. Earlier, Wizz Air claimed USD 114 million had been invested to improve the airline’s operations after CAA took “unprecedented enforcement action” against Wizz Air in 2023, for “falsely refusing passenger compensation claims for flight disruption”. The ATM 2024 is the leading global event for the inbound and outbound travel industry in the Middle East from May 6 to 9, 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Center, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The ITB China is one of the largest B2B exclusive trade shows focused on the Chinese travel market, scheduled from May 27 to 29, 2024 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center. All major perishables items saw notable decline in imported quantity during December 2023, reports Maldives Ports Limited (MPL). MPL, that manages and oversees operations of the Male’ Commercial Harbor reports, the most significant decline in import numbers of fast moving perishable commodities like Pineapple, Cabbage and Banana. The first two observed 29% drop each with the third observing a 24% decline. During the month, MPL cleared 4,540 containers, which is 6,443 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This includes 2,637 units of 20 feet containers and 1,903 of 40 feet containers.
Students of Himandhoo School visited Urbanco for a career exploration trip on Monday, January 16, 2024. Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) reports a total revenue of MVR 2.21 billion in December 2023, out of which 97.21 million was collected in US Dollar. The total revenue collection for the month was however, a 15.4% decline compared to December 2022. This decrement was due to the Lease Period Extension Fee; which was one of the highest revenue contributors in December 2022. As of January 10, 2024 the Maldives has attracted a little over 50,000 arrivals according to the Ministry of Tourism. Ministry of Tourism in its most recent update revealed a total of arrival of 50,983 as of January 9, which is a 6.4% annual increment compared to the 47,931 arrivals registered in the same duration last year. The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives in Raa atoll, has announced the installation of solar panels as part of the property’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices.
