Tourist arrivals to the Maldives reach close to 1.6 million in annual terms according to the Ministry of Tourism. The ministry revealed that the total tourist arrivals to the Maldives has reached a total of 1,577,890 as of November 11, 2023. This is a 13.0% increment from the same period in 2022. Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has abstained from attending the parliament sitting on Monday, November 13 to address the 2024 State Budget and the supplementary budget for 2023. SpaceX’s Starlink internet services are now available in the Maldives. According to Starlink’s website, the service will provide speeds up to 200Mb/s, and comes at a cost of MVR 1,000 per month with the hardware costing MVR 10,300 inclusive of shipping charges. The Starlink hardware include a dish antenna, a mount and a Wi-Fi router unit. The Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna said that the Starlink internet will provide a unique solution to the Maldives. Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) reports a revenue increment of 61.3% in October 2023, registering a total of MVR 2.01 billion; out of which 77.10 million was collected in US Dollars. The increment was mainly due to the increment in the collection of GST, Tourism Land Rent, Expatriate Quota fee and Green Tax. The cumulative expenditure of the Maldives government reaches MVR 38.2 billion as of November 02, 2023, reports the Ministry of Finance. According to the latest in the ministry’s ‘Weekly Fiscal Developments’, the state has earned MVR 28.1 billion in total revenue, inclusive of foreign grants, by the review date. Authorities have reported of increased scam activities in the Maldives in the past two weeks with over MVR 500,000 stolen from several people. An official from Maldives Police Service said the authority has received reports of 65 distinct scam calls within the past two weeks with MVR 533,000 stolen from the victims. Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Ahmed Saeed reveals the company has accumulated a debt of MVR 1.9 billion as of 2023, with 80% of the amount owed to private third-parties.
