The Maldives inflation hikes 0.95 percent in annual terms according to the Maldives Statistics Bureau. According to the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, more than 1600 applications have been submitted to the designated portal for the new social housing scheme within first week of its announcement. The ministry’s statistics show a total of 1,160 applications for housing units (apartments) and another 456 applications for land plots. The ministry also adds that another 7,605 remain in draft stages within the portal. Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, the Maldivian Minister of Housing on Wednesday, announced the government’s plan to develop 12,000 new housing units in 2026. The minister made the remarks during a state-run Public Service Media’s program. During said program, the minister recalled the government’s recent contract with the Bank of Maldives (BML) to develop 3,272 housing units – which is already in progress. On Thursday last week, the President’s Office confirms the Maldivian head of state’s decision to abolish the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) and replace it with the Maldives Digital Service. The tourism industry of the Maldives is off to a spectacular start in 2026 as the country attracts more than 120,000 so far in January. Statistics from the Ministry of Tourism shows an annual increment of 10% in arrivals in comparison to the same period last year.
