Minister of Economic Development Mr. Fayyaz Ismail has renewed hope on the implementation of the minimum wage policy in Maldives, once again.

Earlier, in May 2021, the minister had confirmed the state was moving towards the implementation of a standard minimum wage policy in the island nation. He further stated that the implementation will come through before the end of 2021.

While speaking during the convocation ceremony held at Maldives Polytechnic on Tuesday evening, Minister Fayyaz had sounded hopeful in renewed efforts.

The minimum wage issue has long been mired in debate and disparity, while the cabinet minister highlighted on the challenges the country faced in implementing such a policy. Minister Fayyaz had also stressed on the unprecedented challenges brought forth by the Covid-19 global pandemic, which had hindered much of the state’s efforts as well.

However, the minister remained hopeful noting that the anticipated policy will have an official announcement sometime in the upcoming week.

Furthermore, Minister Fayyaz had also stressed on the policy meeting mixed reviews and criticism from the public during its early stages but he was confident on prospective improvements on the policy in future.

Implementation of a minimum wage policy in the Maldives, which had not been officially executed before, had been a strong campaign pledge of the Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the special committee on minimum wage had advised an amount between MVR6,400 to MVR8,000 as the standard minimum wage applicable under the policy in Maldives.
