Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid confirms on China’s recent pledge to the island nation of donating 400,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

The minister had made the statement during an interview to a local media outlet, notifying the Chinese head of state Xi Jinping assured his Maldivian counterpart Ibrahim Mohamed Solih regarding the Asian giant’s pledge to assist.

Earlier on March 2021, the Chinese government came forward to assist Maldives government with a donation of 200,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine to the island nation.

Their latest pledge of the additional 400,000 doses will make them the largest vaccine donor to the Maldives; with a collective total of 600,000 doses.

The island nation is expected to find relief with this new development, following the predicament of facing vaccine shortages after the Indian government’s ban on export of the vaccine due to the sudden spike in positive Covid-19 cases in the South Asian ally.
