Velana International Airport Overhauls Traffic Flow With New Zoning System

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has introduced new traffic management arrangements at Velana International Airport (VIA), effective today, targeting smoother passenger movement around Terminal 2.

Starting from 10:00hrs this morning, the area directly in front of Terminal 2 now operates as a dedicated pick-up and drop-off zone. MACL has divided the space into two clearly defined sections, each serving a distinct purpose.

The zone between the roundabout and the Terminal 2 Arrivals area now functions exclusively as a drop-off point. It features marked taxi slots with capacity for four vehicles at a time. Directly opposite, the section between the roundabout and the Terminal 2 Departures area serves as a designated pick-up zone, accommodating up to five taxis simultaneously.

To support the transaction, MACL has deployed staff on-site to direct traffic and help passengers and drivers navigate the new layout. The company says the changes aim to reduce congestion and improve the overall experience for travelers using the terminal.

The adjustments come as passenger traffic at VIA continues to grow, placing increasing pressure on airport infrastructure and ground transport coordination. The new zoning system reflects MACL’s broader efforts to modernize operations and bring the airport’s ground-level in line with international standards.
