Visit Maldives Chief Resigns Five Days After Winning PATA Executive Board Seat

Ibrahim Shiuree has resigned as chief executive and managing director of Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the state-owned company that markets the country abroad. The announcement came on Monday. No reason was given.

The timing is conspicuous. VMC said on 19 August that Shiuree had been elected to the Executive Board of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), an elevation from the PATA Board seat he had held since August 2025. The corporation called it a win for the destination. Five days later, its chief executive is out.

VMC pitched the PATA seat as institutional, not personal. The corporation said the expanded role would support its destination marketing mandate through closer access to PATA’s network of national tourism organizations, and cast it as a route into new source markets. The Visit Maldives Corporation resignation leaves that argument unresolved. Neither VMC nor PATA has said whether the seat travels with Shiuree or reverts to whoever takes the job.

Shiuree ran the agency for a little over two years. He was appointed CEO, managing director and board director on 13 June 2024. He inherited MMPRC and presided over its rebranding as Visit Maldives Corporation. His tenure covered digital campaign spending, wider tie-ups with international tour operators, and a push to sell the Maldives beyond the resort-and-lagoon template.

His background is heavier on infrastructure than on tourism. Shiuree has served as Director of Projects and Infrastructure at United Development Pvt Ltd since August 2011, working on regional airport projects including Fuvahmulah, Dharavandhoo, Ifuru, Kooddoo, Kudahuvadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi. He holds an MBA specializing in public relations and communication from Limkokwing University in Malaysia, awarded in 2011. He has also held board positions at Maldives Hajj Corporation and the construction industry association, and serves as vice president of the Table Tennis Association of Maldives.

No successor has been named. The Visit Maldives Corporation resignation reopens a board the state only recently filled: the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) completed the 11-member body earlier this year with four appointments, alongside Chairperson Abdulla Ghiyas Riyaz and Shiuree. Any replacement runs through the same board.

Tourism supplies the bulk of the Maldives’ foreign currency earnings. The marketing agency sits at the front of that pipeline. Shiuree’s resignation lands with the peak winter booking season weeks away.
