    Maldives attracts over 755K tourists by August end

    Maldives attracts over 755K holidaymakers by August end

    According to the latest updates of Maldives Tourism Bulletin by Ministry of Tourism, the total number of tourist arrivals to Maldives by August end reached 755,966.

    Furthermore, this arrival count is a 92.7% increment in terms of year-on-year basis, when compared with the corresponding period in 2020.

    Moreover, the statistics from the state body confirms the total tourist arrival for the month of August, which stood at 143,599 which is a 3.1% improvement when compared with the same month in 2019 and a staggering 1,780.5% improvement when compared with the same month last year.

    The daily average of tourist arrivals to Maldives during August 2021 stood at 4,632 while the duration of stay increased from 9.1 days in July to 9.6 days in the previous month.

    As for travel trends, the highest growth was recorded from Africa at 373.2% by the end of August which translates to 16,703 tourist arrivals from the region in comparison with just 6,458 arrivals around the corresponding period in 2020.

    Second strongest growth in tourist arrivals is visible from the Middle East, which grew by 293.7% which is a total of 61,945 tourist arrivals by August’s end against an arrival of 26,288 in the same period last year.

    The Americas showed the third strongest growth, with an improvement of 135.5%, which is a total of 46,977 tourist arrivals in comparison with 32,060 arrivals during the same period in 2020.

    By August’s end, Russia still maintained its position as the top source market with an arrival total of 159,873 which 21.1% of the total arrivals. The market also observed a growth of 443.3% in comparison with the same period in 2020.

    India on the other hand, maintained second spot with a total arrival of 157,289 which is 20.8% of the total tourist arrivals to Maldives. Moreover, the market observed a growth of 349.3% in comparison with the corresponding period last year.

    The details of the other top source markets are as follows;

    • Germany – 43,833 arrivals (5.8% of total arrivals – 52.8% growth)
    • USA – 30,441 arrivals (4.0% of total arrivals – 148.0% growth)
    • Ukraine – 27,098 arrivals (3.6% of total arrivals – 40.2% growth)
    • Saudi Arabia – 25,559 arrivals (3.4% of total arrivals – 245.7% growth)
    • Spain – 21,941 arrivals (2.9% of total arrivals – 452.7% growth)
    • UK – 17,391 arrivals (2.3% of total arrivals – 48.5% decline)
    • Kazakhstan – 17,368 arrivals (2.3% of total arrivals – 500.1% growth)
    • France – 14,573 arrivals (1.9% of total arrivals – 34.2% decline)

    Meanwhile, it was later reported that the total tourist arrivals to Maldives is at 781,325 as of 06th September while India took over Russia to become the strongest source market with a share of 21.5% of the total arrivals.
