Maldives has welcomed 1.3 millionth tourist visitor for the current year of 2021, despite Covid-19 challenges and the new Omicron variant led setbacks across the globe.

Moreover, the premier tourist promoter of the Maldives; Visit Maldives had confirmed that the island nation achieved the feat on Monday, 27th December.

As part of the reception of the 1.3 millionth traveler to the Maldives a special ceremony was held at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Sunday. Meanwhile, the traveler has been confirmed to be a Romanian national named, Constantin Stelian Emil who traveled to the Maldives via GullivAir.

The traveler was welcomed by the Chief Executive and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed, who was flanked by officials of the Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Immigration and MACL.

Mr. Emil was conferred with gifts on behalf of MMPRC, the Ministry of Tourism and other stakeholders – he traveled to the Maldives along with his spouse and two children.

Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed had celebrated the monumental achievement while emphasizing on the joint effort of all tourism industry stakeholders to sustain the economic sector through tough times.

“Despite all the challenges, 2021 has been a great year for the Maldivian tourism sector, achieving many milestones and receiving many accolades and awards, one of which was the prestigious World Travel Awards leading destination 2021 title,” Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed said.

He further added, “reaching 1.3 million visitors is not a small achievement considering how volatile the global tourism situation has been throughout the year. This is all thanks to the consistent and courageous efforts of all frontline workers, the government, ministries, MMPRC, other stakeholders, NGO’s and associations. We have many plans for the next year and will hopefully bring in even greater achievements as we proceed.”
