    Maldives attracts over 1.3mn holidaymakers

    Tourist arrivals to the Maldives exceed beyond 1.3mn as of 29 December 2021

    As per the most recent statistical updates from Ministry of Tourism, over 1.3 million holidaymakers arrived to the Maldives as of 29th December 2021.

    From the 01st to 29th December 2021, the total tourist arrivals reached 155,053 observing a 71.0% increase when compared with the same period in 2020 where the arrival total stood at 90,683.

    However, when compared with the same period in 2019 the arrivals in 2021 were still 4.2% below. From 01st to 29th December in 2019, the arrivals to Maldives stood at 161,801.

    On the other hand, the year-to-date total tourist arrivals (from 01st January until 29th December) observed an increase of 138.8% in 2021 when compared with the same period in 2020 while it is still 22.5% when compared with the corresponding period in 2019.

    Statistics further confirm that the daily arrival average has increased to 5,347 from 01st to 29th December from 4,824 in November while the average duration of stay increased 8.4 days in the review month compared to 8.0 days in November.

    Meanwhile the daily average arrivals in annual terms reached 3,616 as of 29th December while the annual average duration of stay in 2021 (up to the review date) stood at 8.7 days.

    India continues to remain as top source market with 290,920 annual arrivals (22.2%) and Russia maintained second spot with 220,213 annual arrival (16.8%) while Germany ranked third with 94,784 annual arrivals (7.2%).

    United Kingdom was the fourth strongest source market as of the review period with 62,188 annual arrivals (4.7%) with USA maintaining fifth rank at 55,565 annual arrivals (4.2%).

    Moreover, a total of 161 resort properties are now at operational capacity which contributes an overall 38,226 beds to the tourism industry. A total of 621 hotels and guesthouses are now operational which collectively contribute 12,056 beds in the industry while 143 safari vessels are now at functional status which contributes 2,858 beds to the industry.

    According to the latest statistics the operational bed capacity of Maldives tourism industry as of 29th December stood at 53,140.
