    Tourist arrivals to Maldives by late-Jan 2022 exceed 100K

    Tourist arrivals to the Maldives exceed 100K by late-January 2022

    According to the latest statistical update from Ministry of Tourism the total number of tourist arrivals as of 26th January 2022 reached 109,842.

    The arrival total by the review period observed a 48.0% growth compared to the corresponding period in 2021 during which the arrival total hit just 76,059.

    Although arrivals to Maldives observed significant growth from 2021 to 2022, it is still noticeably below the arrival totals in both 2020 and 2019. As such, the tourist arrival for the review period is still 31.16% below that of the figure in 2020 during which the arrival total stood at 150,385.

    On the other hand, arrival count for the review period is 12.93% below pre-pandemic levels observed in 2019 during which the arrival figure stood at 125,022.

    Russia continues to maintain top source market spot since the current year started, with more than 20,000 Russian travelers already visiting the island nation. Statistics confirm that a total of 20,244 Russians, which is 18.4% of the total tourist arrivals to the Maldives so far in 2022, have arrived.

    United Kingdom is currently the second strongest source market with 10,602 arrivals which is 9.7% of the total arrivals to the Maldives, India has bounced a rank up from fourth to third with 9,044 arrivals from the country so far which is 8.2% of the total arrivals.

    Meanwhile, Italy is currently at fourth rank with 8,705 arrivals (7.9%) and Germany resting at fifth spot with 8,267 arrivals so far (7.5%).

    Other major source markets to the Maldives include Ukraine (4.2%), United States (3.8%), France (3.8%), Saudi Arabia (2.6%) and Austria (2.2%).
