    Tourist arrivals to the Maldives exceed 210k so far in 2022

    According to the latest update from the Ministry of Tourism, tourist arrivals to the island nation have already exceeded 210,000.

    As of 16th February 2022, the total number of tourists arriving in the Maldives reached 210,184.

    The total tourist arrivals on a year-to-date basis also indicate a 44.9% increment and for February exclusively, a 48.1% increase.

    So far in February (from 01st to 16th) the total number of tourist arrivals has reached 78,420 whereas in the same period of 2021 the tourist arrivals stood at 52,943. However, tourist arrivals for the review period are still below the arrival numbers of both 2019 and 2020. Tourist arrivals for the same period in 2019 stood at 101,354 and in 2020 it stood at 84,563.

    Statistics indicate that tourist arrivals have yet to breach the pre-pandemic levels.

    As for the year-to-date basis, tourist arrivals from January up to the reviewed date of February showed 210,184 arrivals whereas, in the same period of 2021, the arrivals stood at 145,046.

    However, for the corresponding period in both 2019 and 2020, tourist arrivals were higher than the review period with a total of 252,906 arrivals in 2019 and 257,910 in 2020.

    Russia maintained its top source market position with 33,191 arrivals, which is 15.8% of the total tourist arrivals to the Maldives so far while United Kingdom is still enjoying second rank with 24,010 arrivals (11.4%).

    India still remains in third rank with 18,044 arrivals so far (8.6%) while Germany is the fourth strongest source market with 15,992 arrivals (7.6%) and Italy is currently the fifth leading source market with 14,599 arrivals (6.9%).

    Other markets in the top ten list include France, United States, Ukraine, Austria, and Switzerland – all in that order.
