Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) recently confirmed that the tourist arrivals to the country increased by 54% in February 2022.

According to the Maldivian central bank, in addition to the increment in tourist arrivals, the tourist bed nights had increased by 45% by the end of the review month. Both tourist arrivals and bed nights observed increment when compared with February 2021.

The total tourist arrivals in February reached 149,008, which was still a 12% decline compared to the pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

MMA noted that the annual increase in tourist arrivals was mainly due to the increment in the arrivals from major source markets which include; Russia, United Kingdom, India, Germany, and Italy – in that order – in the top five ranks.

The operational bed capacity rose by 8,869 beds in February 2022 when compared with the same month last year while occupancy rate rose to 73% in the review month compared to 60% in the corresponding month of 2021.
