    Tourist arrivals to Maldives hit close to 500k, Russia slips to 3rd spot

    Tourist arrivals to the Maldives reach close to 500k, Russia slips to 3rd rank

    Tourist arrivals to the Maldives have reached a total of 498,235 as of 13th April 2022, reflecting an annual increment of 45.3%.

    Meanwhile, the tourist arrivals to the Maldives has increased in comparison with both 2021 and 2020, where it stood at 342,840 and 382,762 respectively.

    However, tourist arrivals to the island nation has still not breached the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. The annual tourist arrival to the country in 2019 stood at 551,527, due wot which the annual arrival in 2022 was still below 9.7% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

    Furthermore, from 01st to 13th April, the total number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives reached 66,724 while during the corresponding period in 2021 the annual tourist arrival stood at 44,270 – indicating a 50.7% increment for the period in 2022.

    As for the top source markets, United Kingdom is currently the top strongest source market to the island nation with 65,683 annual arrivals which is 13.2% of the market share.

    On the other hand, India has taken over the second spot in the top source market list pushing Russia to third place.

    India has recorded an annual arrival of 54,532 which is 10.9% of the market share while Russia, currently in third spot, recorded an annual arrival of 53,716 which is 10.8% of the market share. Other top source markets to the Maldives include;

    • 04th – Germany – 43,875 arrivals (8.8%)
    • 05th – Italy – 34,220 arrivals (6.9%)
    • 06th – United States – 22,658 arrivals (4.5%)
    • 07th – France – 22,476 arrivals (4.5%)
    • 08th – Switzerland – 11,884 arrivals (2.4%)
    • 09th – Austria – 10,648 arrivals (2.1%)
    • 10th – Saudi Arabia – 10,199 arrivals (2.0%)
