    Tourist arrivals to Maldives inches close to 700k

    Tourist arrivals to Maldives inches close to 700k by late May 2022

    According to the latest travel updates from Ministry of Tourism, the total tourist arrivals to the country is inching close to 700,000 arrivals in annual terms.

    Moreover, the ministry revealed that the exact total stood at 680,846 as of 25th May 2022, indicating a 52.8% increment in annual terms.

    During the same period in 2021, the total tourist arrivals to the country reached 445,560 whereas in 2020 it had reached just 382,775. However, tourist arrivals in the review period of 2022 is still 6.8% below pre-pandemic levels in 2019 where it had reached 730,753.

    Meanwhile, tourist arrivals from 01st to 25th May (exclusively) showed a total arrival count of 104,046, indicating an 86.5% improvement when compared with the same period in 2021 during which it had reached 55,790.

    On the other hand, tourist arrivals for the same period in 2019 stood at 84,661, indicating a 22.9% improvement in 2022.

    The top ten tourist market updates are as follows;

    • India – 86,358 arrivals (13.2% share – 01st rank)
    • United Kingdom – 82,325 arrivals (12.6% share – 02nd rank)
    • Russia – 62,545 arrivals (9.5% share – 03rd rank)
    • Germany – 56,058 arrivals (8.6% share – 04th rank)
    • Italy – 43,748 arrivals (6.7% share – 05th rank)
    • United States – 30,391 arrivals (4.6% share – 06th rank)
    • France – 27,488 arrivals (4.2% share – 07th rank)
    • Switzerland – 16,769 arrivals (2.6% share – 08th rank)
    • Saudi Arabia – 13,854 arrivals (2.1% share – 09th rank)
    • Austria – 12,468 arrivals (1.9% share – 10th rank)
