    Tourist arrivals to Maldives reach close to 900k by mid-July 2022

    The most recent update from the Ministry of Tourism attests the total tourist arrivals reaching close to 900,000 as of 18th July 2022.

    As per the government body, the total tourist arrivals in annual terms (from January until 18th July) reached a total of 892,960; which reflected a 58.2% increment in comparison with the same period in 2021.

    The data collected by the authority confirms the annual tourist arrivals by the same period in 2021 stood at 564,472.

    Despite the strong improvement in tourist arrivals to the island nation in 2022, it was still 4.8% below pre-pandemic levels (corresponding period in 2019). The ministry reports tourist arrivals for the same period in 2019 stood at 937,802.

    India which holds a market share of 14.7% as of review date is currently ranked first while UK is ranked second in the source market list with a market share of 11.7% and Russia ranked third with a share of 10.4%.

    The island nation’s tourism industry, which remains its largest economic sector currently enjoys a total of 1,168 operational tourist properties inclusive resorts, safari vessels, guesthouses and other similar tourist avenues.

    The combined total of operational tourist properties contribute towards a an operational total bed capacity at 57,489 beds.
