Maldives welcomed the country’s 1.6 millionth tourist on Tuesday, 20 December 2022.

Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) and Maldives government celebrated the state’s visitor target achievement. Earlier, Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared the tourist arrivals target, set at 1.6 million before 2022 ended.

On Tuesday, Tejas Sanjay Kothari, arriving from India for his honeymoon, became the 1.6 millionth guest arriving in Maldives in 2022. Tejas, along with his newlywed wife flew in from Air Vistara Flight no. UK271.

Upon arrival, Tejas was conferred with special gifts on behalf of MMPRC, Ministry of Tourism and other stakeholders. He was escorted to the event area with traditional Maldivian boduberu and cultural procession.

Among the gifts conferred, Tejas received a gift hamper from Visit Maldives; a free holiday voucher from LUX* South Ari Atoll.

The welcoming event was organized by MMPRC with assistance from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Immigration and Maldives Customs Service. Maldives Vice President Faisal Naseem was the event’s chief guest.

Congratulating all the parties involved in achieving the visitor target milestone, the CEO and Managing Director of MMPRC Thoyyib Mohamed said that the golden jubilee year of tourism holds a record for milestones related to tourism sector.

“We are celebrating yet another milestone following our recent and momentous wins at the WTA. It is no small feat for a tiny nation like ours to be crowned the World’s Leading Destination thrice in a row. Our perseverance during the harshest of times that the world has seen recently led us to these achievement,” Thoyyib said.

Additionally, he also commended the government for its foresight in policy formulation and implementation during and post Covid pandemic.

Furthermore, Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom said, “Appreciate the engagement and support of travel and tourism industry stakeholders in achieving yet another milestone of Maldives tourism success story.”
