    Tourist arrivals to the Maldives less than 300k shy from reaching 1 million

    Tourist arrivals to the Maldives has exceeded over 700,000 as of 10th May, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

    As per the latest updates from the ministry, total tourist arrivals in annual terms reached 731,783 indicating the arrivals were less than 300,000 shy from reaching 1 million.

    The Maldives government earlier announced an annual arrival target of 1.8 million for the year. Meanwhile, the Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom said that this figure was likely to increase by 10% with the resumption of the Chinese tourist market.

    Chinese tourist market resumed arrivals earlier in January 2023, and is currently ranked sixth in the top 10 markets of the year.

    The total arrivals to the Maldives in annual terms is also a 17.1% increase from the corresponding period in 2022, during which arrivals stood at 625,011.

    Arrivals by Month

    • January: 172,499 | 30.9% increase
    • February: 177,915 | 19.4% increase
    • March: 173,514 | 15.1% increase
    • April: 164,356 | 13.1% increase
    • May (1st to 10th): 43,499 | 9.8% decrease

    Meanwhile, the daily arrival average in annual terms is 5,629 while the average duration of stay in annual terms is 7.9 days.
