Joali Maldives on Monday, 18th July, temporarily closed down its doors for repairs after substantial property damage owing to bad weather. The luxury tourist resort reported the property’s main platform connecting the inland with the overwater villas damaged beyond use due to a rainstorm and strong gusts. Despite significant damages to the resort’s structures, Joali Maldives confirms of no casualties or injuries. Following the incident, tourists holidaying at the property have been shifted to the sister property Joali Being, situated in the same atoll. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) gears up to launch their mini-bus service in Male’ City under the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) by late-July. MTCC Chief Executive Mr. Adam Azim confirms the company’s active plans to launch the service between Maldives capital and Hulhumale’. During an appearance on a Public Service Media’s (PSM) show, MTCC Chief confirms all preparations for the service launch complete. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has reported updates on double shore protection projects in two local islands. The contracting corporation reveals that the shore protection project in Baa atoll Dharavandhoo has observed 56% progress, and the breakwater profiling works of Kaafu Bandos commenced on the South-East side of the island. MTCC on Monday, 18th July, confirmed delivery of the second shipment of rock boulders to the project site. Project scope of Dharavandhoo shore protection include 10,800 cubic-meters of beach filling, construction of 490-meters breakwater and 96 meters of revetment. The new passenger terminal in Velana International Airport (VIA) currently in development, will increment the annual passenger movement of the airport venue to 7.2 million, according to Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Greater Male’ Region experienced stormy weather conditions on Sunday, 17th July, due to which Velana International Airport (VIA) faced several plane diversions. According to Mr. Shamman Shakir, the Corporate Communications Manager of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), five planes which included both international and domestic flights were diverted from landing at VIA tarmac due to torrential rain and strong winds. International carriers that were diverted from making landings at the runway include one flying in from Colombo, Sri Lanka. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) commenting about the Maldivian Government’s plan of incrementing Goods and Services Tax (GST) for 2023 has recommended to push back the decision until 2024. IMF in a June issue regarding the economic outlook of the Asia and Pacific region, had singled out the Maldives in its recommendation of postponing its decision for a GST increment.
