The Maldives government collected a total revenue of MVR 3.40 billion in January 2023. According to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the revenue collected in January increased by 43.1% compared to the same month last year. This is mainly due to the increment in the collection of TGST, GGST, Income Tax, Airport Taxes and Fees, Tourism Land Rent, and Green Tax. Tourist arrivals to the Maldives have exceeded 220,574 as of 08th February 2023. According to the Ministry of Tourism in their latest update, tourist arrivals by the review date observed a 31.1% increment compared to 2022. Tourist arrivals by the same period in 2022 stood at just 168,239 while in 2021 it was at 116,881. Total tourist arrivals from 01st to 08th February is at 48,038 which is a 31.7% increment. The cumulative total of state revenues, inclusive of foreign grants, is currently at MVR3.8 billion. According to the Ministry of Finance, as of 02nd February, the cumulative total of state expenditure reached MVR3.5 billion. The state has spent 78% of its budget on recurrent needs and the remaining 22% on capital needs. The overall balance is a surplus of MVR295.2 million. The corporation on Thursday, 09th February, confirmed that the island is now available for booking. Bookings will be made through the island’s official website/application. The Bank of Maldives (BML) has announced upcoming changes to cheque processing. The national bank said that its cheque processing changes are according to the Maldives Monetary Authority’s (MMA) action plan on reducing the usage of cheques. According to BML, cheques above MVR 50,000 and USD 3,000 will not be processed from 01st April 2023 onwards. However, customers can continue to bank online using internet or mobile banking applications to make transfers to BML and other local bank accounts.
