    Tourist arrivals to Maldives grow, exceed 650k

    Tourist arrivals exceed 650k, India becomes top source market once again

    Tourism arrivals to Maldives has exceeded 650,000 as of 18th May 2022, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

    In its most recent travel update, the ministry confirmed that the total number of tourist arrivals as of 18th May was recorded at 655,049 indicating an annual increment of 51.1% from the total arrival of 433,608 recorded by the same period in 2021.

    On the other hand, tourist arrivals from 01st to 18th May were recorded at 78,250 indicating a periodic increment of 78.5% compared to the same period in 2021 during which arrivals were recorded at 43,838.

    Meanwhile, tourist arrivals in annual terms are still below pre-pandemic levels and as such was 7.7% below. In 2019, from January up to the review date, tourist arrivals were recorded at 709,700.

    In a sudden move, India has dethroned United Kingdom to become the strongest source market to Maldives with 86,358 annual arrivals which is 13.2% of the total tourist arrivals.

    United Kingdom has slipped to second position with 82,325 annual arrivals which is 12.6% of the total tourist arrivals to Maldives so far, while Russia is holding on to third spot with 62,545 annual arrivals which is 9.5% of the total tourist arrivals.

    Other source market details are as follows;

    • Germany (4th rank) – 56,058 arrivals (8.6%)
    • Italy (5th rank) – 43,748 arrivals (6.7%)
    • United States (6th rank) – 30,391 arrivals (4.6%)
    • France (7th rank) – 27,488 arrivals (4.2%)
    • Switzerland (8th rank) – 16,769 arrivals (2.6%)
    • Saudi Arabia (9th rank) – 13,854 arrivals (2.1%)
    • Austria (10th rank) – 12,468 arrivals (1.9%)
