Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has promised to honor his campaign pledge for local fishers, assuring the price per kilogram for fish will not drop below MVR 20.
At the “Masveringe Gunzaru” held in commemoration of the Fishers Day, local fishers addressed their concerns to the President.
A key concern of the fishers was about the price of fish, which they requested not to drop below MVR 20 per kilo.
Tuna and other ocean-dwelling fish are currently sold at MVR 25 per kilogram. This increment was made during the previous government led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Earlier, fish price stood at MVR 17 per kilogram for an extensive period, attracting the irk of local fishers who had complained about the low price to the then government. The move to increase the price by former President Solih was primarily motivated in his aim to resolve the issue.
At the meeting held Sunday, December 10, local fishers requested expediting the development of fish weighing facilities in Meemu atoll Mulaku and at the south of Huvadhoo Atoll. Fishers also suggested increasing fish weighing facilities in key areas across the country to help local fishers to weigh their catch easily.
President Muizzu assured to provide realistic and robust solutions to the concerns raised by the fishers. He further promised to tackle the more pressing matters with immediate effect.
While speaking with local fishers, President Muizzu also noted that the concerns raised by them had given insight into formulating a more comprehensive action plan to tackle the prevailing issues in the fisheries industry.
