    Tourist arrivals to Maldives exceed 1.6 million annually, monthly total exceed 116k

    Total tourist arrivals for 2022 in annual terms has reached 1,607,314, reports Ministry of Tourism.

    Meanwhile, the total tourist arrivals from 01st to 21st December stood at a total of 116,071.

    Annual tourist arrivals observed a 26.9% increment when compared with the same period in 2021, during which arrivals had been at 1,266,735. Despite the significant annual increment when compared with last year, the arrivals were still 1.9% below in annual terms compared to the same period in 2019 during which the count reached a total of 1,638,798.

    As for the monthly exclusive total, arrivals observed a 6.4% increment when compared with the same period in 2021 (from 01st to 21st December), during which arrivals stood at 109,082. This was also an 8.2% increment when compared with the same period in 2019, during which arrivals stood at 107,259.

    The daily arrival average from 01st to 21st December was recorded at 5,527 while the daily arrival average in annual terms was recorded at 4,812. The average duration of stay from 01st to 21st December stood at 7.5 days, while in annual terms the average duration of stay was recorded at 8.0 days.

    3. UK: 173,220 (10.8%)
    4. Germany: 128,694 (8.0%)
    5. Italy: 89,097 (5.5%)
    6. USA: 78,011 (4.9%)
    7. France: 46,137 (2.9%)
    8. Spain: 40,970 (2.5%)
    9. South Korea: 35,544 (2.2%)
    10. Switzerland: 33,078 (2.1%)

    Maldives meanwhile, has a total of 1,208 registered tourist properties which gives a combined bed capacity of 60,699. Total properties at operational capacity is at 1,201 which gives a combined bed capacity of 59,803.

    The island nation currently has 33 international carriers operating between Velana International Airport (VIA) and their respective destinations. Major airlines include;

    • Saudi Arabian Airlines
    • Singapore Airlines
